5 Features Of An Excellent Essay Topic
There are many factors to consider when writing an essay. Structure, format, the flow of your writing, and of course, your topic will all determine how successful your final paper is. How can you find a winning topic? What are some of the features of fantastic essays, and how can you put them to work for you on your next assignment?
That's why we're here! Here is our list of five features of top quality essay topics.
- The Topic Is Something You Love Learning About
- The Topic Is Controversial
- The Topic Answers A Question
- The Topic Is Not Too Broad
- The Topic Is Off Beat, Unexpected, Or Funny
Your passion for a topic will always shine through and improve the quality of your paper, and thus your grade. In those cases where your instructor has allowed you to choose the topic of your essay, you should exploit his or her decision, and find a topic that you think is terrific!
Don't be afraid to stir the pot, and select a topic that is a “hot button” issue. Be sure and take a strong position right from the get go. Use your body paragraphs to defend your opening statements. Finish strong, leaving no doubt in your reader's mind that your position is right, relevant, and unassailable.
Asking a question can be an excellent way to grab your reader's attention in your opening statements. Everyone will be curious to know the answer, and how you will explain it. How do bees make honey? Where did the hamburger first originate? When does a baby's heart first start beating?
Keep your topic narrow enough to be manageable, and your arguments easy to follow. A subject that is too broad will often result in an essay that wanders off in many directions, and loses the interest of your reader. Keep your thesis tight, your essay well-structured, and your train of thought easy to follow.
If you have come up with a subject that is truly off the wall, do consult with your course adviser before you begin working on the essay. Of course you want to avoid topics that are especially gruesome or offensive.
That said, many instructors are open to unique ideas, or creative interpretations of essay topics. As long as you can prepare a strong defense of what you claim in your opening statements, there is no reason why any topic could not be a terrific topic!

Structured Content and Logic Presentation
Each of essay sections should be well defined and written clearly. This means you should know what details to include while minimizing the amount needed. You may need to rewrite each section more than once before settling on your final copy. You should also remember to proofread, edit, and revise as these elements help make your structure more solid. Think about your details in how you want readers to view it from your perspective.
